   FAQ

Here are some answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about what it's like to be in Cerddorion:

1. What kind of music does Cerddorion perform?

The repertoire is mostly a cappella, with emphases on early, modern, and contemporary music.

2. How many performances per season are there?

We do three concert programs, in November, February, and May. For each program we do two concerts, one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan.

3. When/where/how often does the group rehearse?

Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings, from 7-10 p.m. now at St. Ignatius church on the UWS, beginning near Labor Day and continuing through mid-May. Each concert cycle typically has approximately ten Tuesday evening rehearsals and one rehearsal on a Saturday (from about 10 AM to 5 PM).

4. What level of musicianship is expected?

The artistic director often teaches a piece, but members are expected, when asked, to prepare music outside of rehearsal. They're also expected to retain what was learned in rehearsal (not just the music, but also dynamics, phrasing, other markings) when the piece is rehearsed again.

5. What else is expected?

Members are expected to show up for rehearsals on time, and to keep their absences to a minimum. On a larger scale, Cerddorion is self-run, and each member is asked to help in what ever way they're able, whether it be in advertising, fundraising, audience development, or tasks to be done the night of concerts (organizing receptions, ushers, etc). Our Board consists almost entirely of members of the group, and is always happy to accept new members.

6. Do members pay dues?

Members pay $150 per season, plus an average of $25 per concert for music (which is kept by each member). No one is turned away for lack of funds; talk to anyone on the Board if you'd like to pay in installments or request a scholarship. Dues pay for rehearsal space, our artistic director's salary, and other expenses (hiring instrumentalists or soloists, for example).

5. What makes Cerddorion special?

Cerddorion performs a wide range of repertoire, both in terms of the span of time represented (from chant to new pieces commissioned by the group) and in terms of doing masterpieces of choral music, and also unfamiliar pieces. The quality of musicianship and level of commitment in the group lead to performances that are satisfying for the members of the group and for our loyal and devoted audience. On a more personal level, singing with Cerddorion is a lot of fun. The atmosphere in rehearsal is focused but relaxed, and many lasting friendships have been formed in the group.
